SMIO/ Advanced Consumer Marketing, round III.
Well, to say the least: the past week has been really intense! Since we got all the assignments in a row, there was some work to be done… We started by the assignments given by Per Ã…man as their deadlines were between last and next week.

The first assignment (6 points) was to analyze a brand through the Kapferer prism, as part of the branding literature. My group and I chose the Scottish whisky Johnnie Walker. We studied videos, pictures and other materials that we could find on the brand’s website and we prepared a 8-min presentation on the subject. I admit, it made me wanna try a sip of this beverage! Everything went pretty well and I was satisfied with our work. I believe this assignment helped us to get a better understanding of the Kapferer prism and the concept of branding.

The second assignment (6 points) was to analyze an E-business organization in details. In relation to the lecture given by Daniel Kindström, we had to be critical regarding the service development of a firm. My group and I chose to study It’s Learning, the virtual learning environment platform used by Linköping University and other European institutions. We came up with a 10-slides presentation on the topic, that also went good!

The third assignment (6 points) is coming up next Monday. In group, we had to study the 300-pages book No Logo by Naomi Klein and write 3-pages of comment regarding a couple of questions asked by Per Ã…man. Hopefully, a lot of online videos (interviews or summaries) made the reading easier! Anyway, no the paper is almost ready to be sent, the only ‘thing’ left is the seminar where we’re gonna discuss different ideas and opinions within the whole class.

Hugh Hefner and his 3 playmates.
The last assignment (6 points as well) was pretty much the same as the first one. Still on branding, we have to prepare an 8-min presentation, as well as a 5-pages report based on the analysis of a lifestyle magazine through the Kapferer prism for next Tuesday. My group and I wanted to be a bit controversial and that’s why we chose the magazine Playboy. Just for the record, my group is composed with 4 girls..and me. Anyway, we analyzed the content (on paper and online) and prepared a similar hand-out than last week with the whisky.

The reason why we are prepared in advance for the two next “small” assignments is because we still need time to put our thoughts together and get over with the writing of our marketing mission that Per Frankelius gave us 2 weeks ago. This assignment gives 20 points! Quite a lot. The problem is not that it is interesting or not, it is rather the workload compared to the amount of time! Given our two first and half weeks, we would expect to be informed of the 4 small assignments and this marketing mission earlier! Now, with all these assignments, we clearly don’t have time to be as prepared as we could for the exam coming up next friday and giving away the only individual 31 points.
Well, one solution would be to put on hold one or two small assignments and sacrifice a few points on them. That would free a bit of time to study for the exam…but when do we get critical knowledge and deep understanding in all that? All in all, I hope that every students will find the time to prepare for the individual exam, but also hand-in all those assignments before the deadline.
