Those of you who follow my blog will know all about UF Linköping, the foreign affairs association at Linköping University. Last week, UF Linköping organised a political trip to Kosovo. Some of you may never have heard of Kosovo, as it is one of the newest democracies that declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Due to the interesting and at times, flared, political situation in Kosovo, UF Linköping thought it would be interesting to organise a trip there.

The trip was amazing! In total we spent 7 days there. The main part of the trip consisted of meetings with politicians and NGOs. The highlights were: meeting the former Foreign Minister of Kosovo; going to EULEX; going to the Youth Initiative for Human Rights; and going to the NGO ‘Lëvizja FOL’ (which campaigns against corruption in Kosovo).

Two things stood out for me during the meetings. First, there is a lot of curruption in Kosovo, and the country is having a lot of problems solving this

issue. Second, gender inequality is high in Kosovo. We heard various statistics, but the Swedish Embassy in Kosovo told us that only 12% of the official workforce in Kosovo consists of women. However, it needs to be remembered that Kosovo is still a very young country! It is less than 10 years old. Taking this into account, the progress made by the country is incredible. It does NOT look like a country that was involved in a war just 20 years ago. The people of Kosovo are also extremely friendly, and they are very much like western Europeans.

At the weekend, me and two others decided to do a bit of travelling in the region. We hired a car and went to Albania for a day and then to Montenegro for a day. Montenegro was beautiful!

UF Linköping offers a political trip once a year, so if you decide to study at Linköping University, I definitely recommend you to participate on their trips. You wont regret it!
