Multilingual practices in Swedish residential homes
Maziar Yazdanpanahs slutseminarium
(SoK, IKOS & CEDER)
Opponent: Anne Marie Landmark Dalby
(Center for Multilingualism in Society across the Lifespan, University of Oslo)
Aim and research questions
Drawing on the view that body and language are integrated and different languages make up the unique repertoire of a multilingual person, this dissertation aims to study the interactional resources available to participants in the multilingual setting of residential homes in Sweden. In addition, it aims to explore addressing practices in linguistically diverse encounters in residential homes. The following questions are addressed:
- How do participants (caregiving staff and residents) establish a common ground when they do not have any, or limited access to a shared spoken language?
- How are moments of emotionally intense situations managed within multilingual settings where participants do not have any, or limited access to a shared spoken language?
- How are participants addressed in the culturally diverse and multilingual setting of residential homes, and what are the prospects and/or consequences of different practices of address?
